Checking In

Pain Spectrum – yellow, but mellow, if you can believe it.
BM/RD Index – 4
Fuzz meter – 5

Well, it has been over a week since my last post, but unlike every other hiatus during the last year and a half, this break had nothing to do with a pain surge. Nope, my K and I actually had a relatively busy week of enjoying friends in NYC and its environs. I had to do a lot of resting to pull it off, but who cares? I was outside, baby!!!! The trend continues today – I am about to embark on an actual subway+walking excursion to pick up a b-day present. (Junebugs. Gotta love ‘em.) My idea of happiness: actually being able to go out to buy a present for someone I love. The icing on the cake? I get to spend time with Bro B and his angel tomorrow, if I can manage it. Oh, and I managed to do some work (1000+ words) on Book II of The Chronicles of Ianthe Darkchild, in addition to a good amount of research. Guess resting isn't always a bad thing. In other words, this week will continue to be short on postings, but for really good reasons. Just wanted to share that with you all. Cheers!

Strawberries

Pain Spectrum – yellow-red; getting better!
BM/RD Index – 5
Fuzz meter – 4

Tomorrow is my K's b-day. As fitting for a Junebug, my K has an addiction to strawberries. So that is what he is getting – strawberry jam, strawberry shortcake, strawberry salad, strawberry syrup – it is all strawberries, all the time in this Harlem household. The apartment smells of rhubarb and fresh fruit, the World Cup matches are all programmed in on the DVR and, if we are lucky, the heavens will clear long enough for an after-work rooftop champagne toast. So raise a glass and share a wish: here’s to everyone having a fabulous weekend!

Ugh. The apartment is engulfed in a miasma of damp stickiness. The air conditioners have gone missing. Thunderstorms seem permanently stalled over our street (actually, this is rather cool, in a scary sort of way). My fingers are so swollen that I can barely bend them to type. You know what that means – it is officially a veg day! Time to go surfing.

Charlie Suisman’s Manhattan User's Guide: Charlie Suisman is, to me, the prototypical New Yorker. Funny, irreverent, insightful, opinionated and always engaging, Mr. Suisman’s MUG email is a daily treat. I highly recommend signing up. Added bonus for New Yorkers: his tips on shopping and services in the city are THE BEST.

Apartment Therapy: Gotta love me some Apartment Therapy. Advice, tips, pictures, finds, trends, you name it; if it has to do with a (typically) small-spaced apartment, AT will have it covered. Their daily scavenger posts are a morning ritual for me, and yes, I have actually bought things from this list. It is a great resource for NYC living (and los angeles and chicago and san francisco, now that they are branching out to other cities), but what I most love about AT is their lightheartedness. This is a community that treats a well designed and organized home not like some sacred cow, but as fun (and lifelong) romp in the park. Tip for those going to check it out: the comments from readers are often fantastic and filled with a lot of esoteric tidbits. Added bonus: the kitchen. A room well worth its own blog. I love these guys.

The Morning News: A daily compendium of what is right, wrong, and weird with the world. I have been reading this site for more than a few years, and have found that TMN consistently culls and posts the best pieces on the hot topics of the day. But the editors also manage to sprinkle in links to terrific “soft” stories on culture and the arts, plus links to things that can only be called bizarre. The result is daily snapshot of what the world is up to that is fittingly absurd. It’s a great way to start the morning. Added bonus: their Features. Golden.
